Accessible Malta

The Maltese Islands are fairly accessible throughout and are now more wheelchair-friendly than ever before! Starting with your arrival, Malta Airport has trained assistants to help those with reduced mobility, and you can even book Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM) services through your airline carrier. There is also priority seating inside the terminal, as well as lifts and escalators to all floors, designated toilets, and parking.

When it comes to tourist attractions, many temples, museums, churches, and forts have been adapted with ramps, lifts, and mod-cons to make them more wheelchair-friendly.

If you want to visit a seaside location, many of the Blue Flag beaches are equipped with wooden walkways and parking for persons with disability. There are floating beach wheelchairs available too.

Transport

Airport

If special assistance is required at Malta International Airport, staff are trained to make your arrival or departure from Malta as seamless and comfortable as possible. You can book Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM) services through your airline carrier.

  • Autistic Passengers

Autism-Friendly Programme

The Autism-Friendly Programme asks autistic travellers through Malta International Airport to complete a form to help identify ways in which the team can appropriately assist them. Travellers can also order a free wristband or cap; two accessories designed to ensure that the airport’s staff can immediately identify the person needing additional assistance. Please contact the airport to learn about the various other initiatives in place to support qualifying travellers.

Gozo Ferry

The Gozo Ferry is also fully wheelchair accessible, though if you are travelling by car, it is essential to make yourself known to staff and let them know you would like to be parked near a lift, otherwise you risk being blocked in by other cars and having to remain in your vehicle for the duration of your journey, which is not permissible.

Contact Gozo Channel in advance of your journey to advise them of the date and time you expect to arrive at the ferry terminal so they can prepare to assist your boarding and crossing.

The itinerary involves a 25 minutes crossing during which the passengers can relish some of the most picturesque and panoramic views of the islands.

The elderly, infirm as well as the disabled have no difficulty in accessing the upper deck as each new ferry houses a lift service with an eight person capability.

Disabled Passengers: our crew and terminal staff are pleased to offer additional assistance to persons with disability. Our vessels are designed to permit wheelchair maneuverability in public areas.

Information leaflets regarding the service of assistance can be downloaded in English and Maltese.

Connections: public transportation is available to and from ferry terminals. Please note that bus connections are only available for certain sailings (particularly day trips) passengers are advised to check with various bus centres for the latest schedule information.
